Do all first books in a BDSM Romance series need to be a "Scene Virgin Stumbles on a BDSM Gathering, and Gets Literally Roped In!" one? (The first MASTERS OF THE SHADOWLANDS book, CLUB SHADOWLANDS, has a very similar premise.)

If so, I'd recommend this one to people who aren't heavy-duty Scene types but might like to try it out a bit - Laera is intelligent in her curiosity about bondage and behaves intelligently for someone who's unfamiliar and a bit scared, but interested; and Bruce is a fun "Good Guy Dom", being a bit emotionally wounded and a bit of a flake as well as a definitely Dominant Male. It's obvious from the start they're ideally matched - but of course, if there weren't a few hitches (or the non-rope bondage variety) it would be a short book!

This story also sets the tone for the series locale, "Bondage Ranch" - a combination inn/Regency-country dance barn that on weekends becomes a fetish paradise - and its owners, Alex (a maternal and imposing subbe) and her husband/Dom Dylan (who doesn't SEEM very Dom most of the time!). I really enjoy this series - and this is a great introduction to it.

Laera decides to go hiking while camping next to some noisy neighbors at a campground. She ends up lost, but also found and rescued by Bruce, a very yummy Dom who is staying at a BDSM ranch. She's attracted to him and takes up his offer to spend the rest of her vacation with him at the ranch exploring her sexual nature.
During a day hike while camping, Laera gets lost, and to add insult to injury, twists her ankle and gets caught in some brambles. Fortunately Bruce hears her cursing and rescues her from her predicament. He's staying at a nearby bondage ranch and when he brings her there at first she's appalled by what she sees. With Bruce's gentle coaxing, she eventually submits to her own desires and to him and when the weekend ends, she knows she can't return to "vanilla". As for Bruce, he sees in her a woman he could truly make his own...if he could only fully leave his past behind.

Many BDSM stories focus on the more physically intense aspects of play with the Dominants being more intense and dark. In contrast, Bruce is what could probably be termed as a sensual Dominant, preferring the mental path of domination. He's wonderfully gentle to the new-to-BDSM, albeit enthusiastic Laera and one gets the idea that this is more his style than an affected behavior simply for her. Preferring intricate roping to edgier play, he is nonetheless quietly confident in his own skin. It was, however, intriguing reading about some of Bruce's hang-ups regarding the term "Master", as many seem to prefer the term.

The secondary characters in this story are equally interesting, especially Mistress Sue. Not one to be particularly attracted to women Dominants, she warmed my heart and made me think she'd definitely be a woman I'd want on my side. I thoroughly enjoyed my first read by author Sindra van Yssel. Roped In was a great story; I look forward to its sequel, Pushing Limits.

Book 1 of the Bondage Ranch series started off strong for me however 10 chapters made the ending to quick. I think it would have been a very good book and a more satisfying story if it was a full length novel versus just a good short story. I will be looking into more of this series.

Basically the majority of the story was about the weekend Laera and Bruce meet. I enjoyed the `Master Zen' Bruce relationship with Laera and the patience he had introducing her to the BDSM life style. The scenes they shared were very hot and I enjoyed the humor that was interspersed through out the story.

My favorites...

"You smell wonderful," he told her. "So aroused." "That's the bug spray," she said.

"Mae West had it right--try anything once, do it again if you like it."

"Stay away from Mistress Laera," said Frank, "or I'll find grounds to sue your ass off. Possibly for damaging my fist when I pound your pretty boy face in."
Picked this one up on my and bought it right away! I'm new to the genre but thought the author did a great job of writing a believeable storyline with likeable (okay, loveable) characters. Don't let the series title 'Bondage Ranch' fool you! This book had the right amount of romance and heat. Have a man, fan or cold glass of water handy....I've already read the 2nd book in the series and hope there's a 3rd!!!
As someone who has experienced many of the things she writes about, I applaud the story telling and the accuracy of being in the scene. I highly recommend Sindra's books to anyone interested in BDSM and romance. I look forward to reading the rest of her stuff!
